Garden restoration set to continue

Earlier this year we made a big leap forward with clearance of self-seeded Sycamore and diseased trees to expose the prospect Mount south of the Hall. Now the next phase of restoration of the garden to the south of the Hall is set to continue with approval gained to spend grant money from Veolia, Lancashire Environmental Fund, and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

We will be closing our ‘Diana’ car park in August after the Classic Car Show and ripping up the tarmac to reinstate the formal Italianate Parterre. The Garden wall will be repointed and fruit trees and climbers planted. New paths will be laid and the area enclosed in traditional steel estate railing. The garden restoration has been designed by award-winning landscape architects Randall Thorp and contractors will start on site in a couple of weeks.

This next phase also includes laying a gravel spiral path and steps up the Mount using historical maps as a guide to the correct location. The steps will be made using Larch timber that has been felled and sawn on site, and much of the construction will be done by our hard-working volunteers. We suspect they will need plenty of liquid refreshment during the summer months!

The area is set to continue its transformation from neglected woodland to historic parkland this summer and we hope you enjoy watching the work take place.
