Record attendance Mikado

Lytham Hall has led the country with the record attendance for the recent open air production of The Mikado. The four play outdoor season which began with Chapterhouse Theatre’s Great Expectations in mid-June has drawn over 1500 spectators to Lytham Hall, including 450 for The Mikado, the largest attendance of Illyria’s nationwide summer tour which visited 29 venues from Inverness to Penzance. Illyria’s company manager Edward Simpson praised the welcome his cast received at Lytham Hall after travelling from a very windy Edinburgh on the previous evening. “To play in front of over three times as many people as in Edinburgh on a very still evening in the superb surroundings of Lytham Hall was

Repairs underway

When vandals caused damage to our beloved Lytham Hall, staff and volunteers were temporarily in the doldrums when faced with the mindless vandalism. Using the Hall windows for target practice, over ten glass panes had been shattered by golf balls. Visitors to the Hall have been looking at shuttered windows in the meantime. The damage also affected the Hall’s pride and joy, the Gold Room. This room showcases hand-painted 18th century wallpaper, restored gold leaf wallpaper and Gillow of Lancaster mirrors. The room is widely known locally as one of the loveliest places to get married, offering an intimate setting for 60 guests. It was clear, with weddings on the horizon, there was no time to w

The Emperor's New Clothes

Hans Christian Andersen’s much loved story The Emperor’s New Clothes will provide a spectacular finale to the Lytham Hall four play outdoor season next Sunday 27 August. Illyria’s annual family show on the late August Bank Holiday Sunday afternoon has become a tradition for Lytham families over the past seven years, with 600 flocking to see Danny, the Champion of the World last year, the largest attendance of Illyria’s nationwide summer tour. Callum Stewart, making his debut with Illyria this summer, feels that it is the inventive touches of Oliver Gray’s production which capture the audience’s attention. “I have spent all summer cavorting about as the Captain of the Guards on a frilly hors

Vintage bus day on bank holiday Monday

The Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust is organising its fourth ‘Classic Bus Running Day’ on Monday, August 28th, 2017. Following the success of last years’ event held at Lytham Hall, we will be returning there on Bank Holiday Monday, 28th August. The event will run from 10.00 to 16.00. The Hall and its vast parkland provides a perfect setting for our vehicles and there will be a free bus service which will connect the Hall with Lytham Town Centre, Fairhaven lake, which is a popular local tourist destination and onwards to St Anne’s Square. This will necessitate a quite intensive service using many of RVPT’s preserved Ribble buses and a number of other preserved buses which originated with lo

Preview of The Mikado

Illyria will bring The Mikado to Lytham Hall on Sunday 20 August for the third open air play of the season, promising a delight for the eyes and the eyes. Illyria’s cast of six have visited 38 very diverse venues on their six week nationwide tour, including Chepstow Castle in Wales, Musselburgh Racecourse near Edinburgh and Hartland Abbey in Devon and their production has been widely praised. Rachel Lea-Gray who plays Katisha believes that it is the rich variety of Gilbert and Sullivan’s music which has always attracted full houses to productions of The Mikado for over 130 years. “The Mikado has every type of song from tricky tongue-twisters to romantic ballads, from quartets to full choral

The Emperor's New Clothes tickets for sale

The spectacular open air play at Lytham Hall on August Bank Holiday Sunday will provide an ideal final treat for Lancashire families, as the six week summer break draws to a close. Lytham Hall, one of the country’s best supported venues for outdoor theatre, will welcome the Illyria Theatre Company and their performance of the popular Hans Christian Andersen story The Emperor’s New Clothes on Sunday 27 August at 4.00. Around 600 are expected, mostly in family groups, for the play which takes place on the north lawn of the Hall, a Grade One Listed Georgian Mansion. The lawn is ringed by impressive 200 year old beech trees which create excellent acoustics and shelter from coastal breezes. Illy

New path opened

A donation from the 2016 open air theatre season has significantly improved the pedestrian access to Lytham Hall. A 300 yard brand new path, parallel with the single lane roadway leading to the Hall, has recently been opened following weeks of construction by teams of volunteers at a cost of £5000. The costs of the materials and equipment hire have been met by the proceeds of last summer’s four play season which culminated in Lytham Hall drawing the biggest attendance in the country for the family show Danny, the Champion of the World. Julian Wilde, organiser of the theatre season, feels that the path is a very considerable improvement for those approaching the Hall on foot. “Walkers can now

Who's for the chop...

Could Theresa May, Nigel Farage and Donald Trump be for the chop in the next open air play at Lytham Hall? Actor Edward Simpson who plays Koko, the Lord High Executioner, in Illyria’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado which comes to Lytham Hall on Sunday 20 August, is keeping very quiet about the names of those in his signature song “who never would be missed”. “Since The Mikado was first performed in 1886 when George Grossmith, one of the most famous actors of the era, played my role as Koko, it has been an accepted tradition that Koko’s “little list” will be adapted and updated to include the celebrities of the day. It provides a topical challenge for the producer and cast an
